There was a lot of hype over the release of the latest offering from Apple the iPhone 5 and after the launch the reviews have been mixed with a few rave reviews and a few poor reviews. Certain new features on the iPhone 5 have been appreciated whereas a few have been termed to be a hindrance. In this review we will look at the different aspects of iPhone 5 and analyze them in brief.

Design

iPhones have always been phones that fit onto your hands in a comfortable way and the most important advantage was the way it could be used with one hand. The new iPhone 5 still fits snuggly in the hand, but with a reduced weight of 112g feels light and there are some people who do not like that. It is something that one will get used to and should not be an issue.
The increased screen size makes the iPhone 5 123.8mm tall and the increase in size will not be noticed easily by people who have been using the iPhone 4S. This is a good ploy by Apple as it will not put of people who don't like large screens. With the increase in height, getting to the power button can be tough using one hand, but you can still cover the entire screen with your thumb.
Both the ceramic white version and the anodized black version have a two tone effect on the back and it is something that is appealing to the eye and under the finger. The sapphire glass that is used in the back is durable and the two sections of pigmented glass that is used at the top and bottom gives a pleasant feel. Apple has tried to make the iPhone 5 exterior strong to try minimizing damage when it falls, but there have been reports of scratches and flaking appearing on the black anodized version.
Apple have made the antenna more powerful and this is a welcome change, but moving the 3.5mm audio jack from the top to the bottom has met with some flak as it can be uncomfortable when headphones are plugged in. The new lightning port that has replaced the older 30 pin connector is also something that many do not like as it means they will have to buy an adaptor to use it with the many iPhone accessories, docks and chargers that they have bought.
The iSight front facing camera has been moved to the middle and the home button has been made more robust to reduce the problems that users have expressed with the home button of earlier versions.

Display

The resolution of iPhone5 is still 326 ppi and the retina display is still one of the best around. One cannot notice changes in the display when compared to the earlier model of iPhone and one major change is that the display has been brought closer to the glass thereby increasing brightness and sharpness. The display is crisp, bright and clear and has not over saturation and is similar to the display of the 4S.

Calling

The call quality has been vastly improved and with 3 microphones in the iPhone 5 it makes it easy to have clear conversation even in windy environments and next to a busy street. The number of call drops have greatly reduced and the efforts that Apple have put forth in this area has reaped benefits. But then finding people to call is still very similar to the older versions and there is a lot of scope that Apple has to improve when it comes to contacts.

FaceTime

FaceTime is back on iPhone 5 and it is better than ever. With the improved iSight front camera one can now have HD quality video calling provided you have the network to handle HD video calling.

Messaging and Email

Calling may not be iPhone's strong point, but messaging sure is and with the increase in height you can see a lot more of what you are typing. iMessaging is also available, but then it still needs refinement and we expect it in the forthcoming updates. The simplicity and the ease of using Email continues in the iPhone 5 and is very similar to the earlier models.

Social Networking

There is still a lot that can be done for social networking integration and this is one area that greatly disappoints in the iPhone 5.

Camera and Video

The camera is pretty similar to the one on the iPhone 4S and the only advancements are that the pictures can be taken 40% faster and the introduction of the new dynamic low light mode that helps improve dark images considerably. Video recording quality has been improved vastly and now offers great quality video recording.

Other features

The new earphones (EarPods) are not that great and probably have to be worked upon. Inter connectivity is great as usual and there is lot of improvement in the gaming front. There have been mixed reviews about battery life and one has to wait for more reviews on the battery. Availably of 4G is great for users who have access to 4G connections and connectivity is great. PC connectivity has never been a strong point of iPhone and it still isn't. Other features like iCloud, Passbook, Reminders, Siri, Maps are very much similar to the 4S and there is nothing much to talk about.
